The Head of Bob aka Dutchboy

A very good friend of my husband and I who lives in New Mexico. He has one of the greatest faces to paint and I finally got around to painting it. Not only a great face but one of the greatest people we know! So sorry we are so far away!

This is an oil on linen, 12x12.

Absolutely fantastic! Inspired! I love his eyes and flesh tones. What a great face. Did he sit for you?

Hi Silvina!
Thanks!
No he did not. He came out to Jersey for a few days and I took some pictures of him while he was in my kitchen under the light. When I did the painting I just darkened the background so you don't know where he was.

Well, you did a fantastic job of making the painting feel as though it was painted from life. And it looks timeless. I wouldn't think that there was a microwave somewhere near him.

Wonderful painting; I think you did an outstanding job on his eyes, too!

Silvina,
I actually used the photo from my computer to paint from. It makes it so much easier because you can see every pore in someone's face so it is almost more real than real life.
I think the thing about painting from photos is to not , keep it painterly, because for some reason it starts to look like it is from a photo if it is too tight.
The actual painitng is so much better than what is on my blog. Once again you lose all the subtleties.
I should post the original photo.

Thanks Leslie!
He also has such great eyes to paint.
I was going to go back and do some more on the ears and hair.I put the painting aside to dry a bit before I went on to another layer and then people kept coming in to the studio and kept saying don't touch it, leave it that way, so it stayed. i still think i am going to go finish his ears more. He hassuch great ears too!

Nice work. I bet one could recognize him in real life, from this portrait. Looks like a friendly fellow.

I just saw this painting at the Phillip's Mill exhibit. You are right- the photo doesn't do it justice. It was my favorite painting at the exhibit.
